In 2010, Dr. Acierno, Director of PTSD at the Charleston VA Medical Center, recognized that veterans still grappled with social stress even as their symptoms improved. Seeking a solution, he turned to sailing—a blend of social engagement and mastery. His vision led to the birth of Veterans on Deck and ultimately to CORA’s Military Salute Regattas in 2021. The event fosters camaraderie and welcomes Veterans and Active-Duty Military to race sailboats with our CORA Skippers on beautiful Charleston Harbor.

Now in its 4th year, the Military Salute Regatta (MSR) Presented by Blackbaud will build on the enthusiasm of the past and will again support both Veterans on Deck and Fisher House Charleston to further their important work. Your participation in the Regatta makes a meaningful impact on veterans, local military, and their families, on Regatta Day and continues throughout the year.

The funds from our Regatta directly aid these causes. Learn about our beneficiaries below and more information is on page 5:

• Veterans on Deck: Provides sailing experiences for veterans and active-duty military with hidden wounds. Veterans on Deck schedules three, 2-hour sails per week, resulting in 518 individual sailing experiences in 2022. The funds raised contribute to their operational expenses and mission.

• Fisher House Charleston: Offers free lodging for military families and supports their well-being. The Fisher House accommodates over 1000 families annually, saving them $2.75 million in lodging expenses since opening in 2018. Our support helps with property maintenance, upkeep, meals, and amenities while loved ones receive treatment at the nearby VA Hospital.

While CORA is active all year round, this annual regatta has become particularly important to us as the experience we share with veterans and service members lasts beyond the event itself. Being included is one of the most beneficial avenues that a community can offer to support veterans and welcome them home. Inclusion is proven to help mitigate the effects of PTSD and other issues that often haunt our veterans. This Regatta gets Veterans and Active-Duty Military together as team members, while they share the experience with their family and friends who participate on the spectator boat. Everyone benefits, including our sponsors and donors, as we come together to share in the sport of sailing and support the beneficiaries that provide services to Veterans and Active-Duty Military long after race day!

Your support will allow us to exceed participation and contributions made over the past three years.

More information about our beneficiaries is below and also available on their respective websites:

Veterans on Deck (VoD) is a 501(c)3 organization that works as a community partner with the VA Medical Center of Charleston by providing sailing experiences for veterans with hidden wounds from their time in the service. Their mission is to prevent and treat the invisible wounds that affect members of our Armed Forces, during and after their service, through a sailing program that offers holistic support and resiliency training. There is no fee for veterans to participate and sail with VoD.

VoD currently schedules three, 2-hour sails per week, year-round, weather permitting, on 2 boats. In 2023 they implemented 149 scheduled sails with 774 individual sailing experiences. VoD is on track for a 15% increase in sails and participation for 2024. The financial support received from the MSR will go directly to meeting the annual overhead expenses of dockage, insurance, repairs, and boat maintenance for two sailing vessels. Since VoD is an all-volunteer organization, all the funds received go toward their mission.

The Fisher House Charleston hosts over 1000 families per year, at no charge. It serves over 75,000 veterans from 22 coastal counties (from Myrtle Beach to Hinesville, GA). While most stays are 3-5 days, there are several families who stay longer for extended treatment needs. Fisher House Charleston has saved military families $2.75 million in out-of-pocket lodging expenses since opening in 2018! The funds received from the MSR go directly into upkeep, property maintenance, meals, utilities, and other amenities provided to family members while their loved ones are hospitalized and receiving treatments. MSR proceeds will continue to support, and augment, the Fisher House’s ability to serve military families during this difficult time in their lives.

Help us Give More in 2024! Donations of any amount are meaningful. Your support lasts long after regatta day!
